About us

energy science for tomorrow es4t

ES4T is a Joint Initiative supported by the ETH Board under the Joint Initiative Scheme.

This Joint Initiative aims to engage with society and foster a dialogue about energy with all generations. An exhibition, living labs, digital dialogue platforms, outreach activities, and communication channels are developed with the institutions of the ETH Domain – ETH Zurich, EPFL, Empa and PSI, the Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus der Schweiz, VHS), and other partners from science, industry, and society.

The Joint Initiative engages with the public about the complex challenge of lowering greenhouse gas emissions by fostering a multidimensional approach, including an exhibition, a living lab, and dialogue platform and promoting continuous exchange between academia, industry, politics, and the public to tackle the causes of climate change and what we can do to improve it.

ES4T

About us

Lowering greenhouse gas emissions to minimize the impacts of climate change is one of the major challenges faced by humankind. One central pathway towards decreasing emissions is transitioning away from an energy system based on fossil resources. Transforming the energy system is not just a technical challenge but also an economic, political and social one.

To meet the set climate targets, we need to consider these different angles and factor in the a multitude of stakeholders. In this Joint Initiative, we have brought together the ETH Domain institutions, the Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus der Schweiz, VHS) and other partners from science and industry to engage with society and facilitate dialogues with all generations on the topic of energy. Specifically, we are developing exhibitions, a living lab, a digital dialogue platform, outreach activities and communication channels.

The exhibition and living lab will become a permanent part of the VHS. At the same time, specific exhibits will also temporarily be showcased at the different academic institutions during the funding period. The living lab will be an engagement research laboratory where visitors can experience science directly and get in touch with researchers. The dialogue platform, outreach and communication channels will be permanently integrated at all partner organizations to continuously promote an exchange between the academic, economic, industrial, technical, political and public levels beyond the funding period. In this way, we will connect and engage with society from all backgrounds, Swiss regions, age ranges and sectors.

Our Vision

Our vision is to activate a transformative shift towards a sustainable future by addressing one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: lowering greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change. We believe that achieving this monumental task requires a multidimensional approach, encompassing not only technical innovation but also economic, political, and social engagement.

Through our Joint Initiative, we aspire to create a dynamic platform for dialogue and collaboration that transcends generational boundaries. Our vision includes the development of an innovative exhibition and a vibrant living lab, both serving as educational and interactive hubs within the Swiss Museum of Transport. These spaces will provide immersive experiences, enabling visitors to directly engage with cutting-edge research and connect with passionate researchers.

Moreover, our commitment extends beyond the physical spaces, as we aim to establish a continuous dialogue platform and communication channels integrated within our partner organizations. By fostering collaboration among academia, industry, government, and the public, we envision a harmonious exchange of ideas and solutions that persist far beyond our initial funding period.

Our ultimate goal is to connect with diverse segments of society, spanning different backgrounds, regions, age groups, and sectors. By building bridges between stakeholders, we hope to collectively drive the transition away from fossil-based energy systems and minimize the impacts of climate change for a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
